About Our Hip Fracture Program
The Hip Fracture Program at Ocean Medical Center works to improve outcomes for older adults that experience a hip fracture.
Our program features:
- A multi-disciplinary team approach including the emergency room staff, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, anesthesiologisits, hospitalists, physical therapy professionals, and others.
- Involvement and input of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and First Aid squads in the community.
- Streamlined admissions process upon arrival
- Expedited time to surgery — typically less than 24 hours. Decreased time to surgical intervention results in better outcomes and shorter lengths of stay.
- Sensitivity to pain management
- Daily evaluation to monitor mobility for faster recovery
- Rehabilitation planning earlier in the process
Facts about Hip Fractures and Osteoporosis
- More than 90% of hip fractures are in older adults — 65 years and older.
- Women have a 1 in 7 chance of having a hip fracture in their lifetime, whereas men have a 1 in 17 chance.
- 1/3 of people over the age of 65 fall at least once a year. 3% of these falls result in a fracture.
- 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 will break a bone because of Osteoporosis
