Do Magnets Really Relieve Pain?
Magnet therapy has become increasingly popular, with proponents saying that magnets can relieve chronic pain due to sports injuries, arthritis, and other problems. While it's easy to succumb to promises of relief, you might want to think twice before putting down your hard-earned money for magnet products.
More Questions Than Proof
Some experts theorize that magnets can reduce pain in a specific spot, such as the wrist, by making nearby nerve cells less sensitive. But this theory is still a theory. The research on magnets is very limited. So it's too early to tell if magnets really relieve pain — or what types of pain magnets might help. It will probably be many years before experts know for certain if and how magnets can relieve pain.
Scott E. Metzger, M.D., a board-certified pain management specialist at Riverview Medical Center, recommends a tiered approach to pain management. "Individuals may start
with conservative therapies that do not require a prescription. If pain is severe or does not respond to these measures, you should seek medical advice. Early treatment may prevent the pain from getting worse," says Dr. Metzger. "Often, the best approach is a combination of therapies and lifestyle changes."
Proven pain Relievers
While magnets are probably safe, there are more proven techniques for reducing chronic pain. Try the following strategies:
- Don't smoke. Nicotine may increase pain levels.
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Exercise regularly. It helps pump blood and oxygen to muscles, easing pain. Walking is a good choice. Stretching exercises also may help.
- Try to relax and manage stress.
- For pain flare-ups, use an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as aspirin or acetaminophen. Applying heat or ice also eases pain.
